Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood confirms details of his Indian album, ropes in Nigel Godrich, Paul Thomas Anderson, and a Sufi spiritual band

Radiohead guitarist and all-round compulsive composer Jonny Greenwood has firmed up the previously whispered-about plans to release an album that he was recording in India with Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur.

The album will be called Junun and will be released by Nonesuch on November 13. In addition to Shye Ben Tzur, Junun also features The Rajasthan Express, an Indian qawwali (Sufi spiritual music, in case you haven’t consulted Wikipedia yet) group. The record was recorded by Nigel Godrich in a 15th-century Mehangarth Fort in Jodphur India, which is way more badass than any grotty garage, castle, or studio you’ve ever recorded in.

To round out the true Jonny Greenwood experience, his other frequent creative partner Paul Thomas Anderson has tagged along to film the whole shebang and will be releasing a documentary to accompany the record. The trailer features plenty of street scenes, pointing, and the song “Roked.”

Earlier this year, Greenwood also confirmed that Radiohead are working on new material.
