Tom Recchion (LAFMS) releases first solo album in six years on Elevator Bath

Once there was this shitty writer for Pitchfork, who described experimental composer, visual artist, and multi-instrumentalist Tom Recchion as “generally out of the loop” and as composing oblivious to “trends and times.” While this clumsy chump didn’t necessarily mean that in a bad way, his perspective is still skewed and inaccurate, so fuck him. The truth is that Recchion has always been in the real loop since the 70s, and all of you bullshit yolo-fuckers are out of it. The irony is that P4k is the new Rolling Stone, which means it’s about as relevant as the Old Testament (just going to put this in here and see if it makes it past the editors).

But I’m a sympathetic asshole, so I’ll gladly invite you into the loop. Here’s the deets. Tom Recchion has released his first album in six years, entitled Proscenium, on Elevator Bath. The album consists of six pieces that mostly began as music for film maker and puppeteer Janie Geiser’s play Invisible Glass, an adaptation of Poe’s “William Wilson.” The music has been explained as “an attempt to create a sound world for the viewer that started as they entered the theatre and drenched them till they left in an ongoing series of atmospheres.”

The LP + 7-inch is issued in an edition of 500 copies. If you want to stay in the loop because you’re insecure or have some sort of serotonin deficiency, I suggest you get on it.

Proscenium tracklist:

01. the mesmerized chair
02. entrance music no. 2
03. entrance music no. 1
04. exit music no. 1
05. the haunted laboratory
06. lean your eye into the picture

Okkervil River tour North America for college kids and morose, out-of-shape, debt-stricken, child-laden kids

Wow, everybody, let’s hear it for The Okkervil Rivers. Those hardworking motherfuckers are always out there sweating it out on the ol’ dusty tour trail. And you know what? Sure, sometimes its because there’s an “album” they’re “pushing,” a “product” they’re “marketing” or whatever else you want to stick annoying quotes around (as they certainly did with 2011’s I Am Very Far). But SOMETIMES, ladies and gentlemen, sometimes they just get out there and tour for the sheer fucking THRILL of bein’ out there on the road, playing out-of-sight music for eager college kids; mildly-optimistic, out-of-college kids; and morose, out-of-shape, debt-stricken, child-laden, way-out-of-college kids. And guys, you’ll never guess what! This is one of those times. (Does anyone else ever get that creepy déjà vu feeling?)

Yup. Okkervil River is hitting the road this fall in support of absolutely nothing. Which is, now that I think about it, another way of saying that they’re hitting the road in support of absolutely anything at all! So, just take your pick of what you want them to be touring in support of, and (I assume) they’ll support it. Interested in the original TurboGrafx-16 gaming console? Boom. Blazing Lazers tour. Are you a fan of Neil Degrasse Tyson on Facebook?? Cool, because Okkervil River is touring in support of all those dumb Carl Sagan rip-off quotes that your friends are always re-posting. Do you like that one band Deerhoof? Well you’re in luck, because Okkervil River is coming to your town to promote the fact that they’ll be coming to your town like a month later. And so on and so on. In fact, the only real danger here is if the thing that you you like is actually Okkervil River. Because no matter how harmless it sounds, Okkervil River can’t tour in support of Okkervil River without starting an endless feedback loop and ripping the fabric of the universe apart, ending all of existence for all space and matter and time for ever and ever in the blink of an eye. So yeah, if you just like Okkervil River, stay home and listen to Deerhoof.

WHY? told me to announce their new LP Mumps, etc. “ASAP,” but I didn’t understand that acronym, so I had some lunch first instead

I’m no detective or anything (though I did just stay up all night long watching nine hours of that BBC show Sherlock, so I’m probably more qualified/exhausted than any any of you fucking rubes!) but does anyone else find it just a little bit suspicious that those dudes in WHY? announced a new EP last month, and now they’re coming back to tell us that that EP is actually just the precursor to a new LP, entitled Mumps, etc., that’s coming out on October 8 in Europe (via City Slang) and October 9 in the US (via Anticon), a.k.a. THE VERY SAME LABELS that put out the EP!?!? Dun-dun-duuuuuuun!!!! Huh?! Huh!? Wait… what do you mean “that’s what bands do”? So, no one else finds that suspicious at all??? Oooooh.

Well, in that case, does anyone else find it just a little bit BORING that they’re doing that? Like, how typical can you get, am I right? Are we supposed to be all “dazzled” by the fact that the band crashed the University of Texas music school and, reaching out to a professor therein, wrangled “a string quartet, an eight-person choir, woodwinds, horns” to help flesh out a pile of demos “some five years in the making” and recorded the whole set to tape with no loops whatsoever? Or that the record was produced by the brothers Wolf, and mixed in Atlanta by Graham Marsh (Cee-Lo Green, Katy Perry) with Yoni Wolf? I say “no way.” I do that sort of stuff all the time! I just don’t brag about it. Or make any money from it. Or show anyone the results. Or actually do that sort of stuff. Oh god, I’m such a horrible fraud.

Dignan Porch to release their second LP Nothing Bad Will Ever Happen on Captured Tracks, and isn’t that just damn peachy keen!!!

Hey! Guess what? Nothing bad will ever happen! Everyone will get a kitten and a bicycle and lots of popsicles!

Hey! Guess what else? Dignan Porch are a psych-pop group from Tooting, South London! Their name doesn’t mean anything! They just like how the words sound together! Joe Walsh says that the band picked the name because it “seemed to capture the vibe of the band” when they came up with it! Joe Walsh is the singer!

Hey! Guess what else again? Nothing Bad Will Ever Happen is the title of Dignan Porch’s second LP! It follows 2010’s Tendrils, which was really more of a solo project by Joe Walsh! He says the songs on this new record never focus on one topic for too long! He says, “often I’ll start a song and it’ll begin with some sad stuff about an ex-girlfriend or something and then by the end I’m writing about time travel”! The album will be out August 14 via Captured Tracks! Isn’t that just the bee’s knees?

Hey. Wait. Bad things do happen. Like spilling coffee. And dropping your car keys in a hole. And breaking both arms.

Nothing Bad Will Ever Happen tracklist:

01. Picking Up Dust
02. Sad Shape
03. She Is Landing
04. Darkness
05. TV Shows

07. Sleep With The Dead
08. Never
09. Sixteen Hits

OM postpone August tour after (non-tragic) skateboarding accident

The hidden — and often deadly — violent potential of skateboarding has once again reared its ugly head as OM, the stoner metal outfit from California, have announced that they will be forced to postpone their October tour after an injury to drummer Emil Amos.

Amos, while skateboarding to a local eatery, came across a set of cement steps that he “couldn’t pass up without kick-flipping over.” However, after a lack of momentum and a bad launch due to an uncomfortable pair of new slip-on sneakers, the percussionist soon realized he would not be landing the kick-flip. “I was in the middle of the air, thinking about the snacks I was planning on buying and then it hit me: I was going to come down and I was going to come down hard.”

While the specifics of the injury have not been released to the press, early rumors point towards a severely sprained ankle, making continuous bass-drumming nearly impossible. Marijuana, while suspected in the accident, has not been proved as a contributing factor, although the snacks are questionable.

Finally, the postponed dates (listed below) are planned to be rescheduled for mid-November.

08.24.12 - Chicago, IL - Empty Bottle
08.26.12 - Toronto, ON - Great Hall
08.27.12 - Montreal, QC - Il Motore
08.28.12 - Boston, MA - Brighton Music Hall
08.29.12 - Brooklyn, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg
09.01.12 - Baltimore, MD - Ottobar
09.02.12 - Chapel Hill, NC - Cat’s Cradle

09.04.12 - Knoxville, TN - Pilot Light
09.05.12 - Nashville, TN - Mercy Lounge
09.06.12 - Bloomington, IN - The Bishop
