Portishead and Arcade Fire unite for co-headlining juggernaut tour, vow to crush all lesser tours with their mighty hand

Planning on doing some touring in 2011? Better do it now, because when The Arcade Fire and Portishead come through on their co-headlining tour, they’re pretty much going to crush all other tours. And I don’t even mean that they’re just going to overshadow other tours — I mean that they’re literally going to kill other touring acts. “I will feast on your blood,” said Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler. Portishead member Geoff Barrow was only slightly less threatening, mentioning the proposed tour on his Twitter in a gruff tone. No word yet on the whole tour itinerary, but the two bands are sharing some European festival dates in the summer. So… Europe? In the summer? That’s my guess.

RIP: Gerry Rafferty

From The Guardian:

The singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, whose songs such as Stuck in the Middle with You, Baker Street and Get it Right Next Time soundtracked the 1970s, has died aged 63 after a long illness.

His family said he died at home peacefully with his daughter Martha this morning.

The Scot was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, played with Billy Connolly’s folk outfit the Humblebums, and co-founded the soft-rock group Stealer’s Wheel, before enjoying a successful solo career. Baker Street, released in 1978, was still netting him £80,000 a year more than 30 years later.

New LP from experimental all-stars Mary Halvorson, Weasel Walter, Peter Evans out soon

No wave/punk/experimental drummer Weasel Walter has combined forces with jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson and avant-great trumpeter Peter Evans to bring you a brand new album that “alludes to the vexing encounter between nature and technology.” So expect something that sounds like a more civilized Godzilla vs. Mothra, like maybe having a polite discussion over tea, all “I see your point, Technology, sir. But I beg to differ.” Or maybe not, I don’t know. Nature is SCARY. The collaborative album is called Electric Fruit, and it’s coming out via Thirsty Ear Records on January 25, 2011. There will be a short tour in support of the record, but you don’t have to start planning for that until…. AW GEEZ IT’S STARTED ALREADY.

Broken Social Scene cuddle together for warmth during winter tour

Since Broken Social Scene are Canadian, one might think they’re immune to the harsh temperatures that winter brings. Not true. In fact, the members of BSS are still human (I know, right?) and are just as susceptible as you and I when the temperature drops into the negatives. To survive their upcoming Forgiveness Rock Record (TMT Review) US tour in February, BSS have decided to form a cuddle pile before they go on stage each night, to keep each other warm and to maintain positive group morale. Sounds like a good idea to me, although Brendan Canning’s bony white arms don’t exactly scream “nurturing warmth” to me.
