The Specials Announce Forthcoming "Eighth-Wave Ska Revival" Preceded by North American Performances and Live DVD

The Specials, who have emerged from a seemingly improbable time warp that pulled them straight from 1979 to 2010, have released information on North American performance dates that will be kicked off by an April 13 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The television performance will be the first time that the band have been on American television since a 1980 performance on the late, great American sketch-comedy show Saturday Night Live. Wait… 1980? That doesn’t make sense with my time warp joke!

The Specials have also announced that they will be releasing a “very special” live Digital Video Disc (or DVD) on March 1. The DVD was filmed at a November 2009 performance at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in Shirefordshire, England. The video features performances of plenty of classic Specials tunes, as well a bevy of backstage, rehearsal, and interview footage. The DVD also features a “two-tone” version of the show presented in black and white.

Here are those tourdates:

04.15.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Club Nokia
04.16.10 - Indio, CA - Coachella
04.19.10 - Toronto, ON - Sound Academy
04.21.10 - New York, NY - Terminal 5

Sightings to Give Birth to New LP City of Straw on Brah in April

After nearly a decade of developing their wallow-in-the-mud fallout shelter industrial rock assault, where does a band like Sightings belong if not on their mainstay Load? Well, on Brah apparently — the label helmed by fellow pop/rock-structure boundary-pushers Oneida and subsidiary of indie big boys Jagjaguwar. After taking a noticeable (for some) break from twisting musical composition in a way that threatens music as we know it, Sightings took residency at Brooklyn’s The Ocropolis with Ex-Models/Oneida member Shahin Motia twisting the knobs. What resulted from this is the band’s seventh full-length, City of Straw.

The band claims that this is its most forward, coherent, and frankly best statement to date. Quite a statement, considering the leap in structural progression and sheer awesomeness of 2007’s Through the Panama.

City of Straw comes out on April 12, and it will rock. Because Sightings say so.

Dinosaur Jr. Announces Australian Tour, Super Duper Secret Free Show Next Tuesday in LA

When we last reported on Dinosaur Jr., they had announced shows with TMT favorite Kurt Vile. Sorry, we don’t have any additional Dino/Vile shows for you, but Dinosaur Jr. did just announce an Australian tour for March, which has them playing shows surrounding festivals like Golden Plains and Lost Weekend, and finally ending up at the Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore.

Now, you could spend some money to trek your ass to Australia or Singapore, but the cheaper route would see you making your way to The Troubadour in L.A. next Tuesday (2/23) for a special-edition, super-sized, completely free Dinosaur Jr. show. First come, first serve. Doors at 8 PM. Fun all night, etc.

Since I’m rich, I’ll probably just travel to Singapore. Anyone want to come?

02.23.10 - Los Angeles, CA - The Troubadour (free!)
03.04.10 - Melbourne, AUS - Corner Hotel
03.05.10 - Melbourne, AUS - Corner Hotel

The Fall to Release New Album, Your Future Our Clutter, in April

The Fall have a new record out on April 26 called Your Future Our Clutter. The album, the group’s first since 2008’s Imperial Wax Solvent, will be released via their new home Domino (TMT News). In support, Mark E. Smith is taking his “always different always the same band” out for a UK tour in April and May.

Now, get this: The Fall has now officially entered its fifth decade of existence. They sure don’t make bands like The Fall these days. Animal Collective in 2040 anyone!? By then, we’ll be consuming music through little chips implanted in our ears and merely have to think of a band before music starts playing. I call it the iLobe! Your future, our clutter indeed.

Your Future Our Clutter tracklisting:

01. O.F.Y.C. Showcase
02. Bury Pts. 1 + 3
03. Mexico Wax Solvent
04. Cowboy George
05. Hot Cake
06. Y.F.O.C / Slippy Floor
07. Chino
08. Funnel Of Love
09. Weather Report 2

The Fall tour:

04.24.10 - Edinburgh, UK - Studio 24
04.29.10 - Dublin, Ireland - Tripod
05.02.10 - Keele University, Ireland - Ballroom
05.04.10 - Nottingham, UK - Rock City
05.07.10 - London, UK - Shepherd’s Bush Empire
