The well-liked Super Furry Animals could go on hiatus for 6 years, but they didn’t have the patience to wait for the more profitable 10-year reunion as they plan a string of live dates in May. Suspiciously, the week they tour is also when Domino Records will reissue Mwng on May 1 in the UK and on May 5 in the US. The deluxe 15th-anniversary reissue will be available on vinyl, CD, and digitally with five additional tracks from the original US version of Mwng, titled Mwng Bach, a previously unreleased Peel session, and full live ATP recording.
As it is good form and a well-known Welsh tradition, Super Furry Animals will watch one VHS together on a rainy Saturday night before their live performances. The VHS? The 1997 Shaquille O’Neal vehicle, Steel. Now I’ve heard of Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey, but a movie called Steel? It’s as if someone literally stole the magnolias, right? Guys, this has everything to do with derivative feelings of “Ysbeidiau Heulog” and Gruff Rhys’s throwaway pop creation ideals. Throw away Steel, but return to it with fervor.
