Wilco leave Nonesuch, form dBpm Records with help from ANTI-, announce 2011 dates

According to what we here in the industry call a “press release,” Wilco have created their own record label, dBpm Records, effectively ending their relationship with Nonesuch. Their new label will see distribution by independent imprint ANTI-, the Epitaph offshoot responsible for releasing albums by Tom Waits, Os Mutantes, Neko Case, and Grinderman.

“This is an idea we’ve discussed for years,” said Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. “We really like doing things ourselves, so having our own label feels pretty natural to me. And, to be working with Anti- — a label that was started by a punk rock guy to sell his own records — seems like a perfect fit for us.”

Wilco clearly have an independent spirit, having created their own festival (Solid Sound) and setup their own Chicago recording studio (Loft), but they can’t seem to fully escape Warner Bros. Not only does it own both Wilco’s original label Reprise and post-Summerteeth label Nonesuch, but as the L.A. TimesPop & Hiss blog points out, it also owns the distribution company Alternative Distribution Alliance, which is responsible for getting those tasty ANTI- releases in stores.

And hey, expect Warner Bros. to distribute yet another Wilco album to a store near you soon: the band is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to Wilco (The Album). It’s what we here in the industry call a “new album.”
