Recent college graduate/Queen of the Goths Zola Jesus is heading out for a massive spring tour in support of last year’s excellent Valusia EP (TMT Review). Ms. Nika Roza Danilova, as she is known to her friends, was busy last year blowin’ up all over the place. Domestically she released the Valusia and Stridulum EPs (TMT Review). (Internationally they were combined into the full-length Stridulum II.) She rocked SXSW, appeared in NME and Vogue, and was asked by designer Angelos Frentzos to perform during Fashion Week in Milan. She toured Europe and the US, opened for Warpaint, The xx, and Fever Ray, collaborated with LA Vampires, Matrix Metals, and Prefuse 73, and performed at Primavera Club, Berlin Fest, and Pitchfork’s Offline Fest.

Judging from this tour schedule, 2011 looks to be another banner year for Ms. Danilova. You can catch her performing at the Indie-O Festival in Mexico City, and touring alongside the estimable Cult of Youth and Naked on the Vague.

Damien Jurado announces spring tour; fans of TV shows where 30-year-olds pretend to be teenagers are psyched!

Maybe it’s in the scene where the “sensitive loner guy” makes the equally “sensitive loner girl” a mix CD. Or maybe it’s the next morning, when they both wake up in bed together, still sharing the same set of iPod earbuds. Either way, Damien Jurado has provided the soundtrack to every single guilty pleasure teen drama TV show that has ever existed. So why not give the guy a pat on the back for managing to be the ultimate soundtrack to teenage tears when he hits the road this March? Jurado is also bringing Viva Voce along with him and is supporting his ninth album, Saint Bartlett (TMT Review), which was released last May on Secretly Canadian.

Röyksopp demand more North American tourdates… and they get ‘em!

Late last year, Röyksopp announced a North American tour for the spring. Everything seemed just fine. But it wasn’t, you see, it wasn’t at all! Problem was, nobody booked any dates on the West Coast or in Mexico City. As expected, Röyksopp flew into the kind of rage only Norwegian dance acts can fly into, full of pounding fists, screamed demands for amended dates, and that sweet, sweet bass. Thankfully, West Coast and Mexico City dates have been added to the group’s itinerary, the rage of Royksopp has been quelled, and we can all sleep easy this spring.

Röyksopp dates:

03.18.11 - Toronto, ON - The Guvernment
03.19.11 - Montreal, QC - Club Soda
03.21.11 - New York, NY - Webster Hall
03.23.11 - Washington, DC - 9:30 Club
03.24.11 - Atlanta, GA - Masquerade
03.26.11 - Mexico City, MX - Hipodromo de las Americas
03.27.11 - Miami, FL - Ultra Music Festival
03.28.11 - San Francisco, CA - Grand Ballroom @ Regency
03.29.11 - Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern

Foals go on tour this spring, hold up giant trophy for some reason

It’s been a long-fought battle, but English post-punk outfit Foals did it! Earlier in the day, they hoisted an oversized trophy over their collective heads, all while streamers and confetti fell in celebration of something. “This award, whatever it is, may be for us, but it’s really for you,” said frontman Yannis Philippakis. “We couldn’t have done it without you.” Phillapakis then rose a fist toward the sky as he shouted “Believe in yourself… forever!” and a jaunty song by tunesmith Kenny Loggins played over the proceedings, despite no prominent sound system in sight anywhere.

As exciting as all this is, it’s only slightly less exciting than news that Foals will be touring North America in the spring and playing some of the tunes from last year’s Total Life Forever (TMT Review). Along for the ride will be Freelance Whales and The Naked and Famous. In fact, those two groups will open all dates, with the exception of the 4/20 date in Dallas, which will be Freelance Whales-less (presumably because they will be getting high with the Mavs Man), and the 5/11 date in Mexico City, in which the support situation is unconfirmed.

Foals dates (all w/ Freelance Whales and The Naked and Famous, except 4.20 and 5.11):

04.10.11 - Vancouver, BC - Commodore Ballroom
04.11.11 - Seattle, WA - Showbox at the Market
04.12.11 - Portland, OR - Wonder Ballroom
04.14.11 - San Francisco, CA - Great American Music Hall
04.19.11 - Houston, TX - Fitzgerald’s
04.20.11 - Dallas, TX - Granada Theater (w/ Cut Copy, Holy Ghost, Naked and Famous)
04.21.11 - Austin, TX - La Zona Rosa
04.22.11 - Kansas City, MO - The Beaumont
04.23.11 - St. Louis, MO - Firebird
04.26.11 - Chicago, IL - Metro
04.27.11 - Columbus, OH - Outland Live
04.29.11 - Cleveland, OH - Beachland Ballroom
04.30.11 - Toronto, ON - Phoenix Concert Theatre
05.01.11 - Montreal, QC - Le National
05.02.11 - Boston, MA - Paradise Rock Club
05.04.11 - New York, NY - Terminal 5

New LP from Okkervil River out in May: I Am Very Far not so far away

Everybody talked about reunions last fall, from Pavement to Swans to Archers of Loaf’s surprise appearance in North Carolina earlier this month. But aren’t we forgetting something? While we speculate about which early-90s indie supergroups should get back together, aren’t we neglecting the little guys of today — or at least, 2007 and 2008? With the exception of their work as Roky Erickson’s backing band on 2010’s True Love Casts Out All Evil (TMT Review), Okkervil River haven’t released anything since The Stand Ins (TMT Review) over two years ago. I’ll bet you didn’t even realize how much you missed ‘em, did you, you Shearwater traitor?

After all this time, Okkervil River are back with a forthcoming full-length, I Am Very Far, from Jagjaguwar on May 10. Like many works that come a decade into a career, this one is more complex than ever before: there are strings, horns, and choral arrangements, for one. Lush orchestration is nothing groundbreaking these days (ahem — Sufjan, Andrew Bird, an entire trend of “maximalism”), so frontman Will Sheff boldly asserts that some tracks consist of “file cabinets thrown across the room, a solo created out of a fast-forwarding and rewinding boombox, and much more.” Kooky equals good, hopefully, but we’ll have to wait until May to know the full gamut of rock whimsy. Check out Okkervil River on Jimmy Fallon, where they played “Wake and Be Fine” (a new song which, disappointingly, isn’t quite so weird as flying file cabinets and dozens of musicians would suggest — even with The Roots joining in).

Sic Alps don’t let the Asylum keep them from touring

Sic Alps are some wacked dudes. At least in theory. This is the impression they left with their first string of releases a few years back. Since then its been a cyclical ride for the San Fran duo — a few pop gems will sneak out, then in fierce opposition they’ll last out with somethin’ real dirty. What Napa Asylum (out the other day on Drag City) does is bring this dichotomy together in a downright elegant manner. Enough of my two cents though, let this be your informer. Basically it’s two guys trying to make some real shit, and they’ll prove it by heading out on a tour of the states at the end of February in support of their just-released killer full-length.
