Video game fans: rejoice in having just found your Solid Snake of the music world — because Oliver Coates has somehow managed to remain relatively stealthy while simultaneously sabotaging Metal Gear and contributing to all sorts of acclaimed musical projects over the past few years. He also released a collaborative album with Mica Levi two years ago, AND he has an established relationship with the members of Radiohead (see Coates’s work with Jonny Greenwood on the scores for There Will Blood, The Master, and Phantom Thread, and, oh yeah, Radiohead’s latest album, A Moon Shaped Pool).
And finally: Coates has just signed to RVNG Intl. and unveiled the track, “Charlev,” the video for which was designed by Leah Walker. Watch/listen below, and also take note of its danceable similarities to the last solo Coates album, Upstepping. You wouldn’t necessarily know that the guy is a ridiculously talented cellist, but he so is.
