This past July seems to have been the hottest month in recorded human history, and anybody else living in New York can attest to August being, unbelievably, even more of a hellhole. Relief from the heatwave is needed wherever we can get it; fortunately, DeJ Loaf has graced us with her stab at a “song of the summer,” and it is has swept in like a cool breeze off the gulf to help carry us through. “Miami” is laid back in all the right places, while still anchored by DeJ’s signature charismatic bragging style — this time in service of underlining all the ways in which she is the definitive summer babe (“I like the simple things / But I don’t like that average shit”), while the track’s heart tugging/power-emo chorus — “I don’t know what it is, I just want to be close to you” — leaves it destined for summer mixtape immortality.
