♫♪  Boduf Songs - “The Rotted Names”

Nobody does calm quite like Boduf Songs. On “The Rotted Names,” Mat Sweet once again slowly unravels his unique brand of “calm” that actually evokes a disquieting sense of unease the more you listen to it. Here, the song’s languid demeanor and hushed vocals are offset by menacing lyrics, its rich harmonies and “organic” approach matched by inconspicuously hypnotic structures and subtle electronics. It’s a push and pull: the song — one of Boduf Songs’s more accessible tracks — creates enough space in which to breathe, but it can still feel as oppressive as Boduf’s noisier, more experimental moments.

As Sweet sings during the chorus, “Sometimes the words get in the way.”

I’ll shut up now.
