♫♪  Idiot Glee - “Evergreen Psycho”

“Idiot” is a strong word, in my opinion. And “Glee” is just a weird one. But “strong and weird” is actually just about a PERFECT combination for anyone going around sucking up influences from 60s and 70’s art-pop stylists like Cale, Eno, Nilsson, and (a younger and less completely horrifying) Scott Walker and spitting them back out across the 88 tinkling keys of a glamorously-drunk-sounding baby grand piano.

And that’s just what Lexington, KY solo artist James Friley (a.k.a. Idiot Glee) is doing in “Evergreen Psycho,” the first taste from his upcoming self-titled album, which is due out Jan 29 via Hop Hop Records and was recorded and produced by Stephen Trask (of Hedwig & The Angry Inch fame).

My advice is to not fight the strong-and-weirdness. Just go with it. Go ahead; dim those lights, steam-iron your hair straight, put on your frilliest ascot, pour something colorful into something clear, and check out the clip and full album tracklisting down below. Think of it this way: even if you’re not instantly transported to an Eno-curated fantasy land on some faraway beach, at least you’ll be glamorously-drunk soon.
