♫♪  OKZharp & Manthe Ribane - Kubona

What is it about that shade of magenta and powder blue that so evokes the 1980s? The horizontal lines, getting closer together, approximating the horizon of some planet where the black isn’t negative space — it is the very terra firma. The VHS static morphing into the night sky. The pixelation that, in its eight bits, crystallizes contours and sharpens details.

Chris Saunders’s visuals for “Kubona,” the latest from Okzharp and Manthe Ribane via the folks at Hyperdub, glows with the haze of a cathode ray tube. Pick your reference from the bygone decade, but it doesn’t matter; the hooks will be in you just the same. Catch the debut album Closer Apart from the Johannesburg duo July 6.
