Bola Shapes

[Skam; 2006]

Rating: 3.5/5

Styles: techno, IDM
Others: Jega, Autechre, Christ., Boards Of Canada, AFX

This is a new Bola album, but it isn't. The majority of Shapes originally took root as an unnamed three-pack of 12-inches released around Darrell "Bola" Fitton's 1999 debut Soup (get it?). Having grown weary of eBay and GEMM sellers raking in the increasing profit for those limited-edition singles, Skam decided to give them a proper CD release, further enhanced by three compilation tracks produced around the same time. I believe the sales figures will prove this to be a smart move on their behalf. These ambient techno cuts flow together better than you'd expect from a collection of singles, so any album-seeking fan of the genre should be pleased, and eager young DJs of the MP3-era are now free to party like it's 1999 again. Granted, Shapes isn't as cathartic as the Chosen Lords selection, but you can't listen to Richard D. James every waking moment. Variety is the spice of life, you know.
