Freakwater's seventh album certainly shows a wide range of influence for a sound that is at all times powerfully authentic, old-timey country. The blatantly political "Buckets Of Oil" has an electric guitar intro you'd swear was about to break into some early Metallica riff, while lyrics like "Buckets of oil/ Buckets of wine/ To grease up these gears and shut down my mind" immediately touch on the original soul of protest folk music. The bass clarinet of drummer Joe Adamik is practically psychedelic on "So Strange." But most of all, Thinking Of You is smothered by true country. However, this is not the kind of country you see on Country Music Television, that "young" country, hootenanny, millennium cowboy shit mainly used to sell Fords, mullets, and tragedies to the ignorant. This is country as remembered by those who consider it a true American art form by the people, for the people. As such, it will never be embraced by the beer swilling, gun rack, stuck in the 19th century CMT crowd, who just need something to drink to and forget the lives they've chosen. Damn yous! Play some Johnny Cash, you bastards!
