Psych-folk freak Six Organs of Admittance is back with… a hard-rockin’ journey into space, heavy riffs, and sad sad loneliness (from the looks of the album art and the press release, at least)! Fortunately, this particular voyage dans la lune is more likely to get you headbanging than say, banging your head into a wall and/or glass of vodka — unlike Reigning World Champion of Ultra Depressing Space Pop Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom (Coming Home).” (God that song is depressing.) See, Six Organs’ Ben Chasny has teamed up with his compatriots in Comets on Fire to bring fans a new full-length called Ascent that’s waaaay heavier than the usual Six Organs of Admittance modus operandi (e.g. last year’s Asleep on the Floodplain), in the best possible way. You can check out the album’s reworked version of the track “One Thousand Birds,” which originally appeared on 2002’s Dark Noontide via SoundCloud below. Ascent drops on August 21 via the good people at Drag City.
And coming this fall, Chasny will be packing up some good old fashioned face-scorcher rockets and blasting off on to a brief West Coast tour. He’s assembling a special band for those dates, several of which will have members of Comets on Fire sharing the stage with the Six Organs mastermind. East Coast tourdates are in the works for our friends who do not live in close proximity to the Pacific.
