I have to give props to Animal Youth. You would think a Google image search for this band’s name would yield nothing but pictures of adorable, young animals. I’m talking puppies, I’m talking kittens, I’m talking an unlikely friendship between farm animals. But, it turns out the top results actually are related to the Brussels-based trio, with the first animal youth not showing up until the 15th picture, and the first youth t-shirt for WWE superstar “The Animal” Batista not showing up until the 21st. For a band that just unveiled “Sunday,” a new track from their rather imminent debut album Animal, this is some clutch SEO.
Animal Youth take their cues from such notable bands as Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Echo & The Bunnymen; all probably good models to follow if you want to make it in this whole “post-punk/dream pop/shoegaze” biz. “Sunday” finds them staying true to those influences, crafting a song that feels equal parts raw, ethereal and gothic, as vocalist Guy Tournay delivers a strained, haunted lament over a love that will never be.
Animal is out May 27 via Weyrd Son Records (which is also the 4th birthday for the label — happy birthday to our large adult Weyrd Son!)
