If the time passed since 2004’s rock doc Dig! has taught us anything, it’s that The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s leader Anton Newcombe is a survivor. After the tragicomedy made him an infamous household name (well, in certain types of households), many of its viewers felt justified riding him off as another tortured musical posturer — soon to succumb to substances, anger, mental illness, or any combination of the three.

Instead, Newcombe continues to carry on waving the BJM flag with the consistency of a young buck in his prime. Not only does he keep busy on a bunch of recording fronts, but he seems to be constantly touring. Case in-point: Newcombe and The Brian Jonestown Massacre have just recently announced ANOTHER North American tour…plus a bunch of dates in Australia and Europe.

BJM were born to play the Levitation Festival in Austin and will do so on April 29 at Stubb’s with The Black Angels, Rishi Dhir, and Annabelle Chairlegs. From there, Newcombe and co. will be making their way through all the US hotspots (as well as Toronto and Vancouver) before heading off to Australia for a June tour and some August festival dates in Europe.

And because Newcombe can’t ring in a season without releasing something, the American purveyor of British Invasion-styled stoned blues and psych shoegazers will also be putting out a new album this summer. His umpteenth album and first since waaaay back in 2017, the forthcoming (and aptly titled) Something Else is preceded by the taut teaser “Hold That Thought.” Newcombe’s still got the mutton chops, but does he still have the music chops? Well, take a listen to the killer below (and grab your copy here when it’s released as a 10-inch on May 18) and just you try to say “no.”
