I can picture it now. You’re at a party talking up this hipster chick/dude. Someone puts on Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People, track two rolls around, and you drop your bomb: “Hey, you know this song, ‘KC Accidental’? Yeah, that was totally the name of Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin’s band before they were Broken Social Scene.” Then you might make up some story how you saw them with three other people in the back of a taco restaurant. S/he swoons, and the rest is history.
But the jig’s up now! On October 26, Arts & Crafts will reissue the group’s two self-released EPs, Captured Anthems for an Empty Bathtub and Anthems for the Could’ve Bin Pills, in one package under the creative title of… Captured Anthems for an Empty Bathtub // Anthems for the Could’ve Bin Pills. The record will be available in double-CD, double-LP, and digital formats.
If you’re new to Broken Social Scene, these KC Accidental EPs might be a bit different than the slick Forgiveness Rock Record (TMT Review) jams you’re used to. Both EPs were recorded using a reel-to-reel 8 track and a DA88 in the glamorous respective settings of Drew’s bedroom and a friend’s living room. While the first EP was created almost solely by Drew and Spearin (with trumpet parts played by Metric/Broken Social Scene member Jimmy Shaw), the second EP features contributions from a lineup of future Broken Social Scene superstars: horns by the aforementioned Shaw and Stars’ Evan Cranley, bass by Jason Collett on one track, drums by Justin Peroff on two songs, and a duet between Drew and Metric’s Emily Haines.
By the way, if you’d like to see a bunch of those people in their new-fangled Broken Social Scene group, they’re currently on tour.
