Why, the mystical, quaalude-poppin’ stork who was put out of his old job bringing babies to Earth because of modern sex ed and his sad-but-kinda-cool-because-it’s-vintagey drug habit! Now his work involves bringing Cabaret Voltaire compilations and box sets out of the ethery wonderland where they’re born and into a record store near you, silly! I mean, where else are all these recent Cabaret Voltaire comps coming from? SERIOUSLY.
I mean, #8385 (Collected Works 1983-1985) came out last year and it’s already sold out. How do you explain that? But the stork is good (if lazy), so to dry your tears, he’s bringing us #7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978-1985) on July 1. This new comp brings together Cabaret Voltaire’s 1978-1981 period and their 1983-1985 years together at last. Founding (and now sole) member Richard H Kirk has gathered up the group’s finest 7-inch singles, edits, and shorter tracks to chronicle the early years with Kirk, Stephen Mallinder, and Chris Watson before moving on to the years when Mallinder and Kirk were doin’ their own thang, sans Watson. The release features liner notes from Kirk and Mute label founder Daniel Miller, and it’ll be available on CD/double-vinyl/digital. Live dates and new tracks are in the works for 2015, but for now, listen to the radio edit of “Crackdown” and peep the full tracklist below.
