Ryley Walker & Bill MacKay join forces for the advancement of instrumental guitar music

Anyone plotting the trajectory of folk troubador Ryley Walker would know his axis is way higher than 45 degrees at the moment. With his much fancied Primrose Green record but a few months old and bootlegs of his ever-evolving live show solidifying his solid gold standard, it’s hard to not imagine Walker dressed as Midas and touching loads of random objects in 2015.

The Whistler in Chicago is now planning to redecorate its crib in gold following a Ryley Walker residency in January, which culminated in a weekly folk freak-out jam with other Chicago musicians like Bill MacKay (Darts and Arrows). The venue/label was prudent enough to commit it all to tape for the world’s listening pleasure in the form of an album called Land of Plenty, which will be available on August 14.

Promising to be an instrumental album that will “run the gamut from fingerstyle ballads to psychedelic waltzes and raga-inspired blues,” Land of Plenty has no tracklist at the moment, but you can sample a slice below while you pretend to be Freud and interpret the cover art and what it says about the collaborative pair.
