Out at parties five years ago, Cut/Copy were my go-to band when the question of who I listened to inevitably came up…probably because I guided the conversation there…probably because I write about music and so, ostensibly, “know something about it,” which provides me with a chance to “shine.” Cut/Copy (that’s how I stylized it then, probably because that’s how they stylized it then, or I think it’s how they stylized it then) were a safe choice, maybe the safest: Everyone liked Cut/Copy. Fair enough, right? Tough to argue with “Hearts On Fire” at the end of the day.
But after Free Your Mind’s arguable-rehash of a follow-up Screamadelica! (and its lyrics that made it start to seem like maybe all those molly mantras were being held onto for too long?), Cut Copy returned this year with a very different record — Haiku From Zero — expertly shifting the band’s approach away from maximalism toward a sound that mimicked the best of the recent shift in pop toward microhouse timbres…while also occasionally sounding like their early material.
In fact, when I saw Cut Copy at Terminal 5 in December, all the new material fit in seamlessly with their greatest work. So it is with full-throated endorsement of their show that I share with you their new US tour dates, along with a new remix of the track “Memories We Share” by Cooper Saver.
