If there’s one universal truth that can be taken away from the Coen brothers’ film O Brother, Where Art Thou? — and let me assure you, there is — it’s that “old-timey music” is awesome and will be forever awesome. Daniel Bachman is living proof of this fact; he’s a modern-day dude possessed by the old-timey sound, and every album he releases (and he releases a lot of them) reminds us just how good it is.
River is Bachman’s latest dispatch from Takoma central and will be released by Three Lobed Recordings on May 19. A quick comparison to last year’s Orange County Serenade serves as a reminder that this young (like early-twenties young) guitarist is only going to get better and better, and the old-timey sound will be the ultimate winner for having him around.
River is apparently Bachman’s first excursion into a proper recording studio and was laid down in a single day, no overdubs or trickery; and if you check out lead track “Song for the Setting Sun II” below, you’ll have to hold on tight to your socks, lest they be knocked off by the clarity of the guitar and the longing beauty permeating the track.
In the immortal words of The Little Warby Girls from O Brother, Where Art Thou?: “he’s bona fide.” And if you don’t believe them, get a preview of the album now thanks to NPR.
