This week, Dr. Dog fans have two beautiful, brand new reasons to start approaching life with an unabashed vitality.

First, the Philly-based band announced the release of their newest full-length album, Critical Equation — and second, they also announced upcoming dates for a nationwide tour, which will be their first in over two years. If those two things aren’t reason enough to launch into a rapturous display of unadulterated exaltation, then hell. I don’t know what is.

The new album is set to drop April 27 on Thirty Tigers Records, and long-time DD aficionados will find that it carries all of the steadfast rhythms and chimerical melodies that the band has become known for over the last decade-and-a-half. If anything, in fact, it sounds like the record will be even more substantial than a traditional Dog album:

“This record is about a concerted effort to push ourselves to grow with courage and confidence built upon our history together,” says co-front man Toby Leaman. “It was important for all of us to figure out if we were actually doing what we wanted to be doing, or if we were just letting momentum carry us down this path [that] we’d always been on.”

Indeed, if you follow Dr. Dog’s Instagram exploits, you’ll know that they’ve been dabbling in some pretty robust sounds recently, as illustrated to exactness by the album’s first single, “Listening In.” The song sounds like a Scott McMicken tune, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you can stream it (or shall we say “listen in” on it) right over here at NPR, or watch it on YouTube below.

It doesn’t appear that the entire record is available for pre-order yet, but fetch the single here and be sure to keep a watchful eye on the official Dr. Dog information portal, because it certainly doesn’t take a “critical equation” to know that the link will be available soon, and that it’ll probably include some limited edition treats that you’ll want to get your Dr. Dog-worshiping paws on.
