Gadadu. The word evokes mystery, a conjuring from a distant land. Perhaps a repeated chant, calling forth spirits from beyond?
In this realm, Gadadu is the brainchild of bandleaders Hannah Selin and Nicki Adams, a New York City-based band evoking the spacy eloquence of Kamasi Washington, Sun Ra, and Pharoah Sanders. Maybe some Alice Coltrane too, or to go out on a limb, Stereolab if they eschewed electronic instruments.
Either way, some cosmic kind of spirit is clearly at play in their new video for “Bay Songs,” the single ahead of Gadadu’s second LP Outer Song. It features an anthropomorphic tree and an owl that is not what it seems, but the song itself is truly bewitching and transcendent on its own. Gadadu could be an incantation — or maybe it’s just your new favorite band.
