By this point, we’ve all been pretty well conditioned to expect a new Flying Lotus album every two years or so — but what’s that??? It’s been three years since You’re Dead!, and Flying Lotus fans who don’t have the time to follow his every breath are now melodramatically predicting the nigh-immediate demise of instrumental hip-hop (or whatever FlyLo’s unique interpretation of it is)?!?
Tell your friend sporting the fresh kicks and hyperventilating in the corner not to overreact; first of all, Flying Lotus a.k.a. Steven Ellison recently made his directorial debut standing at the helm of the experimental film Kuso, the soundtrack for which contains new music from him plus Aphex Twin and consistent pal, Thundercat. That alone should be enough to convince Cosmogrammamalians (trademark pending) of FlyLo’s continued and active presence.
But just in case that “friend” of yours is still clamoring for more evidence, behold: Flying Lotus has just announced a new North American fall tour, during which he’ll be presenting his brand new 3D live show. The tour will feature two performances at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in collaboration with Red Bull Music Academy Festival Los Angeles with Thundercat on hand — and supposedly, the 3D aspect is, like, TOTALLY UPGRADED and DIFFERENT from the one you might’ve witnessed a couple of years ago!
So, basically: a) CHILLAX; Ellison has got us. And b) get ready to gird your loins (er, I mean: tell your “friend” to gird his/hers) in the event that this new-fangled third dimension tops the good old-fashioned one (see below for a two-dimensional rendering of the latter).
