Once upon a time in Brooklyn, there was a band called Zs. That band included a man known as Charlie Looker, who had also collaborated with the much-ballyhooed Dirty Projectors. Looker was known not only for having a kickass surname (anything that sounds like a compliment used by old ladies is kickass in my book), but also for having a unique singing style, oft-compared to medieval vocal work, which features prominently in his latest output with the band Extra Life. Coincidentally, Extra Life have a new EP, Ripped Heart, comin’ atcha on Mr. Looker’s new record label, Last Things Records.
Come April 5, the EP will be available as both a digital download and a limited-edition vinyl release. The vinyl comes with four downloadable bonus remixes from the likes of Former Ghosts, Laurel Halo, Liturgy, and Xiu Xiu. You can also catch Extra Life serenading the good people of Europe with Deerhoof in April and the wicked people of the United States with Parenthetical Girls in July. If that ain’t enough, go witness Looker gettin’ arty on orchestral pieces with ex-Battles’ Tyondai Braxton when they perform at Lincoln Center in New York (March 3) or the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis (March 4).
