Important Records to release 3xLP version of The Grateful Dead/John Oswald’s Grayfolded, will contain zero James Murphy dance remixes

Come July 22, The Grateful Dead, best known as the band that Animal Collective once sampled, will release “their” 1994 album Grayfolded on vinyl for the first time. Out via Important Records, the triple LP is actually the work of John Oswald, dark lord of plunderphonics/aural plastic surgeon, who layered over 100 performances of The Dead’s “Dark Star” (widely considered by fans to be one of the “Gratest” Dead jams) to create a definitive (read: “nearly two hours long”) version of the song. For those of you confused as to why a label that’s released stuff by Merzbow and Acid Mothers Temple would drop a Dead reissue on you, let me reiterate: It’s a two-hour heady-ass jam. It’s gonna make Michael Gira and his 30-minute songs look like the Ramones in comparison.

Now that I’ve discredited one of your favorite albums of this year, let me tell you a little more about this release. The reissue comes with liner notes by music writer Rob Bowman, interviews with band members Phil Lesh, Robert Hunter, and Jerry Garcia (the ice cream flavor man), and a chart of the source performances, which span from 1968 to 1993. On top of all that, it’s all housed in a triple-gatefold jacket that sounds absolutely perfect for rolling 36-inch-long joints.
