Playing around the margins means you don’t know exactly where music will take you. Margin surfers make a lot of personal, uncompromising, and downright inappropriate music, which — as we all know — is the very best kind. Kristin Hersh kowtows to no one, and although the Throwing Muses and 50FOOTWAVE singer, guitarist and songwriter is an absolute legend among music lovers for her work with those bands, it is her solo career that truly reflects her search for a broader canvas.

Newly signed to Fire Records, Kristin Hersh will release her latest mind piece, Possible Dust Clouds, on October 5. Possessing a voice and songs that convey pain that is rarely understated, Hersh’s stuff is always raw and exposed and wonderful…and Possible Dust Clouds’s many possible consistent tracks will possibly be no different from past solo triumphs.

But in lieu of any more definite info about those dust clouds — and because October is still a long way away — you can listen to Hersh’s voice shine in austerity now with an early draft of “LAX” from Possible Dust Clouds. After you dip into “LAX” below, riff through her upcoming dates overseas where support for most of the shows comes from ex-Throwing Muses and Belly bassist, vedic and western astrologer, and travelling friend Fred Abong, who will be playing tracks off his forthcoming EP. (Note: Hersh will also be playing a set at Robert Smith’s Meltdown Festival on June 21, which has a more-than-marginally amazing lineup.)
