Electronic music institution and known eccentric Matthew Herbert has a new release coming out on vinyl and digitally on November 22: an EP called The Recording. The EP serves as the musician’s debut for Ben Freeney’s label Foom, preceded by lead single “Day Three.”
The trio of tracks on The Recording was improvised in front of (and with the involvement of) a live audience during Herbert’s week-long residency at the Tischlerei Deutsche Oper in Berlin. A sample-heavy work in a typical Herbert fashion, it includes the contribution of Tina Thiede, who “went to Romania by train to get sounds for the project in real time.”
The Recording will be Herbert’s first solo release since 2015’s LP The Shakes; in the meantime, however, he has scored several films, including Oscar-winning Chilean movie A Fantastic Woman, and earlier this year released a Brexit-protesting album The State Between Us with the Matthew Herbert Big Band.
