Mica Levi and pianist Eliza McCarthy release new EP Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall

More from the mind of Mica Levi!

It feels like it’s been ages since the London-based composer and musician initially appeared on our radar, courtesy of her infectious ditties with The Shapes; and that’s mainly because Levi has spent the intervening period garnering all sorts of nominations and awards from art judges inexplicably tasked with doling out those sorts of things. First Levi received universal plaudits for her Under the Skin soundtrack, and several years later, she was recruited to compose the score for the 2017 biopic Jackie, which portrayed the life of Jackie Kennedy subsequent to the assassination of her husband, John F. That score went on to receive an Academy Award nomination, and I’m sure Levi herself would jump at the chance to credit the roughly 23 performers (mainly string musicians) who reverse-transcribed the grieving and emotionally whittled notes. Of those musicians, Eliza McCarthy was seemingly the only pianist within the group.

And now, Eliza McCarthy is definitely the only pianist/musician on a brand new EP that Levi has released! Levi, of course, composed the tracks that appear therein, and judging by the extract from the track “Diamond Gun” (listenable below), McCarthy appears to do a lovely job of conveying what Boomkat refers to a “crepuscular suite” of musical inquisition. Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall has reportedly been in the works for three years, and it follows the 2017 split 7-inch Peace & Riding Through Drinking Harpo Dine, where McCarthy and Oliver Coates both played to Levi’s dictation.
