In an age when every artist rehashes past glories (or someone else’s) ad nauseum, we can forgive the true trailblazers for taking time on their 20th anniversary for a little nostalgia trip. MONO has delivered the goods so many times it’s almost nauseating.
Almost, but not quite. MONO continues its special year with a new EP recorded with Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio.
I'm not sure what the expected gift is for a 20th anniversary (china? platinum? a "Golden Girls" Pez dispenser?) but it doesn't matter. Clearly, MONO wants to give rather than to receive. Aside from scheduling a HUGE world tour with a smattering of events with The Platinum Anniversary Collective (oh, the 20th is platinum!), the forthcoming EP gift features re-recordings of three older tracks from its killer back catalog.
Recorded with Albini at Electrical Audio and mixed by Albini and Temporary Residence founder Jeremy deVine, Before the Past sees the band taking back "L'America" (from their debut EP and debut LP) and "Halo" and the epic "Com?" from 2002's One More Step and You Die.
