Speaker Music (DeForrest Brown Jr.) embraces cultural omnipresence, announces debut solo album Of Desire, Longing on Planet Mu

Hey, look at our boy now! Even though TMT takes absolutely zero credit for the burgeoning musical career of DeForrest Brown Jr., it would be a dereliction of our journalistic duty if we didn’t point out his past history writing for us. Those reviews and articles are but one small example of an insightful mind that’s recently been preoccupied with curation, meditations on black musicians in America, and general media philosophy.

Now he’s gaining ground on the music composition front, and the move to flesh out his Speaker Music project comes despite a prior, conscious inclination to stay in the critic lane. An itch needed to be scratched, ultimately, and having the Planet Mu label in your corner is bound to be boon to whatever musical ventures come after his debut solo effort. First things first, though. What’s happening with one less Kepla?

Of Desire, Longing is the name of Speaker Music’s upcoming release on Planet Mu (out December 6), and you get a pretty decent sense of the album’s overall destination by listening to the excerpt/watching the video below. The horns meandering in noise and static might recall a somewhat less haunting version of The Caretaker’s stuff (though this one might compare more immediately), and the subtitles are open to interpretation, needless to say.

Pre-order the album here, and New Yorkers clued in to the scene, be on the look out.
