Is it… maybe… within the realm of possibility to love abortion too much? I’m not talking about an addiction to the physical act, which would inspire personal abhorrence to the point of vomiting, but rather a simple spoken enthusiasm. Or should I say a yelled enthusiasm. Or should I say an indirect-effort-to-pop-a-blood-vessel enthusiasm. That was a microcosmic takeaway from the one time that I experienced Xiu Xiu in concert, but really, anyone familiar with Jamie Stewart’s recorded work would, I imagine, acknowledge his ongoing penchant for vocal bipolarity. That’s why we love him. That’s why Stewart’s a chronic ruiner of movies, both inside and outside the theater. That’s why Xiu Xiu has motherfucking cancelled (or postponed) the entirety of the North American tour celebrating new Polyvinyl album Angel Guts: Red Classroom (TMT Review).
Excuse the pure speculation. Here’s the statement from Stewart himself, where he merely alludes to throat troubles, which could have a myriad of causes:
I am disappointed and very sorry to say that Xiu Xiu will have to postpone our upcoming tour. I have been having increasing trouble with my throat for years, and this week my doctor advised me not to sing for at least two months or risk losing it permanently. Hopefully, as soon as possible, we will be able reschedule these dates. Thank you to our fans for continuing to support us. We love you all and look forward to seeing you all soon.
