L.A.-based dance trio YACHT (now with longtime collaborator Rob Kieswetter as full member) have recently dropped a single, “(Downtown) Dancing,” and announced a new LP to come out later this year on DFA Records.
The yet-unnamed album will conclude a three-year period of reflection and reinvention from the band, which followed the just controversy over a promotional video for their 2015 album I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler.
In the pursuit of “interrogating technology more deeply,” YACHT’s forthcoming project will showcase their experiments with open-source Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning programs, used as a medium for human-to-human collaboration and drawing from the band’s back catalog of 82 songs as source material. The lyric video for “(Downtown) Dancing,” spurred into motion by designer Barney McCann, was also “handwritten by AI”: using an experimental font called Obsolete, the clip shows the process of an artificial neural network figuring out, in real time, the most efficient ways to move from one letter to the next in any given sentence.
YACHT’s Claire Evans has also recently published her first book, Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women who Made the Internet, which you can purchase here.
