♫♪  Alfred English - “Stoner (Alfred English Remix)”

We’re so glad “Stoner” is still being remixed! Alfred English (whose work could be classified as bass or club, though this is reductive…this track is tagged as club, Jersey, Philly, EDM, techno, trap, bass…the list goes on) preserves the original for a bit before completely changing the idea at the one-minute mark. English borrows form (major drops) and content (sirens, big blasts, major bass) from American EDM, the classically hated genre, but the result is much more nuanced than his predecessors or contemporaries. Yes, it is structured with two clear drops and an outro, and yes, this could definitely bang at any mainstream EDM festival, but English isn’t using the idea of “the drop” as an easy, passable out. Rather, it seems to be an experiment of a drop-can a lead-up have sounds that are usually reserved for the drop? Can a drop have elements of sustain? Because the track clearly contains influences from all the major cities’ club scenes (Jersey, Philly, etc.) as well as the mainstream club sound, it comments on the original Young Thug track’s malleability- “Stoner” was remixed in just about every single genre in the past couple of months. English is paving a new road for experimental electronic producers, who are interested in messing with electronics while avoiding arhythms and esoterics.
