♫♪  R. Stevie Moore & Gary Wilson - “If I Could Only Be With You” (feat. Jimmy Whispers)

As we divulged back in 2016, home-recording trailblazers R. Stevie Moore and Gary Wilson are going to release their first-ever collaborative album. Wait, 2016?! Regardless of how long it’s actually taken them, it looks like it’s finally happening this Summer, folks. Now titled Fake News Trending, the LP will come out on August 30 via Tim Burgess’s O Genesis label (in the UK), as well as on tape through Burger Records (stateside).

Today, the labels shared the second single from the release. “If I Could Only Be With You” is a joint venture with DIY kindred spirit Jimmy Whispers, who lends the song a heartfelt lead vocal plea. The track’s instrumental backbone was concocted exclusively by Wilson, with all three men sharing lyrical credit; it is impressive how much of each of their personality shines through in the end. A ramshackle swing number—always a step away from falling apart—“If I Could Only Be With You” sounds like a late-night ballroom performance delivered by an underpaid, seriously inebriated band, which works perfect considering Whispers can pull off the shtick of a mildly depressed wedding MC like no-one else.

“If I Could Only Be With You” follows the first single off the album, “Hey Gary (Have You Seen My Girl?),” which came out in late May. Besides Whispers, the album is going to feature Jad Fair of Half Japanese, Jerry Solomon, Pall Jenkins of The Blackheart Procession and Three Mile Pilot, and others. You can pre-order it here.
