Holodeck co-founder Jonathan Slade has previously been adamant that the Austin-based label doesn’t operate with a particular genre or aesthetic in mind. We, of course, readily accept this notion, but we also noticed that their two newest releases (both of which are forthcoming) harken back to a scene in which people, dressed in black turtlenecks and wearing extravagant eyewear, danced stone-faced under ominous strobe lights. And it’s probably not a coincidence that Marie Davidson and BOAN have recently been playing shows together; their cold-wave styles complement like sequins and feather boas.
And so we’re on to the other “forthcoming” release. The Texas-based BOAN are releasing their debut album Mentiras on June 9, and it certainly doesn’t seem like José Cota (a.k.a. SSLEEPERHOLD) and Mariana Saldaña (formerly of //TENSE//) are keen on giving up their synth appreciation — lucky for us. The duo’s participation in the now-dissolved electronic trio Medio Mutante was an inspiring lo-fi recollection of a style decades past — and who can resist the desire for more Spanish vocals? Down with French tyranny!
