Deerhunter announce their eighth studio album Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared?

It’s been a minute since Deerhunter announced that they would be going on tour with a new lineup that would be playing new songs, and that one of those new song would be a mid-summer single off a new album that would eventually be titled and then released.

Well, while the lineup on tour wasn’t really all that new, and that mid-summer single is more of a not-in-summer single — more on that later — Deerhunter thankfully were working on an album this whole time. They even came up with a title and release date for it too! Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, the band’s eighth studio album, is set to come out in January.

(Sorry for not informing you of all this sooner. When I the saw news myself, why I got so revved up with excitement, I fell right out of my chair and knocked myself unconscious for several hours! At least now when I throw out my breakfast yogurt because it spoiled, I can smile knowing that the people know about the new Deerhunter album…)

Each Deerhunter album brings out a different side of the band, and this album seems like it will be no different. A press release notes that the band reinvented how they approached things like the drum kit or the individual sounds that keyboards make, and that they plugged their guitars “straight into the mixing desk with no amplifier or vintage warmth.” In doing so, the album seeks to do away completely with the “toxic” concept of nostalgia; so, you know, probably don’t hit the band up on Twitter about how the harpsichord in the new song makes it sound like psychedelic rock by way of the Renaissance, or something.

Down below, watch the video for said new song — “Death in Midsummer” — which definitely sounds nothing like what I just said, so don’t you ever quote me as saying that. While you’re down there, you can also check out the full tracklisting and artwork for Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? as well as Deerhunter’s upcoming tour dates.
