Earth announce new LP Primitive and Deadly, approach traditional pop structures, poke them with a stick

Recently I was at a party and I was talking to this guy I just met about Earth and he asked me what my favorite album was and instead of answering I just told him that if there’s ever some sort of apocalypse situation, I plan to ride around in an ice cream truck blasting Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light volumes one and two as loud as I can as a sort of public service to help people acclimate to the barren wasteland. Fast forward a few months to today and not only do I no longer talk to that dude (because he insulted me by saying my jokes “try too hard” and my sentences are “way too long”) but also, Earth have just announced a new LP on Southern Lord. Yay! Or, as Earth would probably say it, Yyyyyaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy!

The album is called Primitive and Deadly, and it continues Dylan Carlson, Adrienne Davies, and company’s constant shift away from the storied, droney gut punch of 1993’s Earth 2 toward music that, uh, you know, music that uses a lot more Telecasters. Relying more heavily on the guest vocals (guest vocals?!?!) of the likes of Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi, Primitive and Deadly reportedly veers a whole lot closer to “traditional pop structures” than past releases, and features the bass of Bill Herzog along with the additional guitar contributions of Brett Nelson and Jodie Cox. No specific release date just yet, but the plan is for it to be out sometime in September.

In the realm of things with more precise release dates, Southern Lord is also planning to reissue 2005’s Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method and 2008’s The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull come June 24. And if you’re into venn diagrams, movies about Canadian settlers, and the music Dylan Carlson makes all by his lonesome, you might want to check out Carlson’s soundtrack for the film Gold. Carlson will self-release 1,000 special-edition copies of the soundtrack on vinyl in addition to a digital version on June 17. Pre-order them here. If you’re not too cool for SoundCloud (is that a thing?), check out “Gold 1” below. And finally, check the dates below to see where you can catch Earth as they tour the… planet.
