It’s not often we point to Austria first for avant-garde guidance, but we probably should. With a long history of releasing radical sounds and with contemporary natives like Christian Fennesz, Stefan Németh, and Florian Hecker gracing its roster, the Austrian progressive powerhouse Editions Mego alone has become something of a premiere platform for Austrian “out” sounds. If you’ve never delved into their outré world before, then hang onto your alpine hats, because the label’s next project is one to yodel about. On January 12, EM will release 33 33 by the mesmeric head trip NPVR.

“Never ‘eard of ‘em,” you say? The duo is a dream-coupling, consisting of Editions Mego founder Peter Rehberg (who also records as PITA, and in Fenn O’Berg (with Fennesz and Jim O’Rourke) and KTL (with Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley) and Nik Colk Void of Factory Floor and Carter Tutti Void). 33 33 is the debut from NPVR and will be available on vinyl and digital.

Finding fault with anything Editions Mego puts its name to of late is becoming more and more difficult, and 33 33 is no exception. The album is another force Mego-majeure that oozes continental class. Check out the eerie, fragile beauty of 33 33’s opener “Meantime (Part 4)” below, pre-order the album here or here, and shout it from Alp to Alp!
