"This is how I say goodbye." -Jason Lescalleet

Well, guess we all knew this day was coming sooner or later: after eight incredible years’ worth of basically sharing his fastidious compositional sketchbooks with the world, Jason Lescalleet has released what he’s officially calling the final installment of his vault-clearing This Is What I Do series.

This Is What I Do - Vol. 21 is available now to stream and download via Lescalleet’s Glistening Examples label, featuring five tracks (each clocking-in at either 11:11 or 5:55 minutes, curiously enough) with such poignant titles as “I Can Receive Music Alright” and “The Party’s Over (Even Winter Relents).”

NO TEARS though. Instead, stream the farewell album in-full down below, grab your copy here, and read Jason’s final thoughts on the history and personal significance of the This Is What I Do project after the tracklisting:

THIS IS WHAT I DO - VOLUME 21 tracklisting:

01. I Can Receive Music Alright
02. Kiss Me
03. Thirty Percent Flat
04. Korea 2002
05. The Party’s Over (Even Winter Relents)

I published THIS IS WHAT I DO - VOLUME ONE in 2011. It was intended as the first of a three (or five) volume collection of works that would be difficult to source, or material that would be otherwise unpublished. I had some ideas about publishing a volume of live collaborative recordings but these projects somehow lost momentum over time and the shape and concept of THIS IS WHAT I DO changed slightly to act as an open workbook that I could share with my audience.
Three years later, VOLUME TWO was recorded, assembled and published in October, 2014.

At this point, I decided that this “open workbook” concept should be a monthly series and I was excited about sharing my workshop methods with my audience. It was fun and liberating to compose and compile recordings for monthly publication without the formality of deep concept or the need for calling it “my newest project”.
…and so this continued with volumes 3 and 4 in November and December. These albums were received well and my excitement continued. The twelve volumes of 5 through 17 were available individually or by monthly subscription via Bandcamp.
I took a break from the TIWID concept for the year of 2016 and then published two volumes per year in 2017 and 2018.
…which brings us to March 14, 2019 and THIS IS WHAT I DO - VOLUME 21.
I considered ending this series with the round number of Volume 20 but it didn’t feel like the right thing to do, especially without announcing the end at the time. I wasn’t sure then, but I’m sure now.
With VOLUME 21, I will say goodbye.

I thank you very much for your interest in my work, and I sincerely look forward to what new projects will arise now that I have closed this chapter.
