Recently, a friend compared the taste of a beer she was drinking to the taste of smoked gouda cheese, which sounded a little too peculiar at first, but once I tried it, I realized that not only did her description make total sense, but that the beer ruled. So, what about a beer that tastes like red rice and wasabi?
Late last year, Sam Calagione, founder and president of Dogfish Head Brewery, invited Julianna Barwick to perform in the newly renovated and expanded brewing space, and she had a chance to collaborate with Calagione on a unique beer, too. They came up with Rosabi, an Imperial Pale Ale that features hints of red rice and wasabi, flavors said to represent Barwick’s home state, Louisiana, as well as one of her favorite ingredients. Barwick also recorded an EP called Rosabi, which incorporates sonic elements of the brewing process, although on “Meet You at Midnight,” the one track she’s released, I mostly hear Barwick’s familiar dreamy atmospherics.
The Rosabi EP will be released on June 3 via Dead Oceans, and it’ll be available digitally as well as in a physical edition of 1000 10-inch records sealed inside cases of six 750 ml bottles of Rosabi beer.
