Mumdance and Logos’s Different Circles imprint has been responsible for some of the most iconic tracks to come out of the grime/noise/club nexus. Now, fresh from their fearsome, sound-surveying mix CD last December, our comrades-in-grime-and-noise return with a new slab of ice-cold vinyl, titled Weightless Volume Two. Like 2014’s Volume One, this six-track EP hews to the “weightless” sound, a beatless cousin of grime, which incorporates elements of ambient and noise to create sonic objects that oscillate between the awe-inspiring and the terror-inducing. An in-depth exploration of the weird, Weightless Volume Two’s tracks buckle and warp, describing a series of eerie encounters with metallic, viscous, terrible beings.
We have the pleasure of unleashing one of these beings — Shapednoise’s “Deep Core Consciousness.” It’s less a track than an alien life waking from its slumber, its metal plates whining as they scrape together, its energy building as jagged shards of static roil across its back. It steps into the light, time and space distorting under the weight of its unearthly magnitude. Have a listen to the track here:
