Nyege Nyege Tapes throws festival in Uganda, including showcase by SHAPE platform

MTN Nyege Nyege Festival is back. In September, the four-day event — put on in association with its label arm, Nyege Nyege Tapes (one of our favorite labels of 2017) — returns to Jina, Uganda with nearly 300 artists this year. And, as we excitedly reported back in December, Europe’s SHAPE platform is set to once again ensure some of the most forward-thinking musical and audio-visual acts from the old continent get to the world’s festival stages without a hiccup this year by announcing a 13-artist showcase.

Now in its fourth year, MTN Nyege Nyege Festival will boast “some of the continent’s most cutting edge musicians, DJs and producers” (including artists from Nyege Nyege Tapes) while simultaneously providing “the opportunity to present cutting edge producers from Europe and the US to an East African audience.” The festival grounds have doubled in size since last year and will see the addition of two new stages (one focusing on electronic music, the other on traditional Ugandan folk). Artists include Rude Boyz, Sho Madjozi, Jagwa Music, and Sleeping Buddah, with SHAPE bringing the likes of NON co-founder Nkisi, TESA, Bonaventure, Uriel Barthelemi, and DJ Morgiana (among others). Even Jlin will be there! Besides music, the festival’s offerings will include “curated film programs,” local cuisine tastings, and artistic workshops.

Tiny Mix Tapes happens to be one of SHAPE platform’s media partners, so you know what that means: we’ll drink a cold one with you at the source of the Nile, bobbing our heads to some quality music from South Africa, Tanzania, Latvia, and beyond. Look below for the full lineup of the festival:
