Oh yeah, we’re way past the stage where it’s clever to make jokes about utensil hybrids. Rebecca Foon has a productive musical career worth recognizing; and even though many of us will recall her name appearing among the credits of classic post-rock albums from A Silver Mt. Zion and Set Fire to Flames, more recently, the Montreal-based primarily-cellist has been showcasing her own voice, literally and figuratively.

In particular, her Saltland project has been active since 2010, and the 2017 album A Common Truth combined processed cello, piano, and Foon’s voice to create feelings utterly in line with the Constellation catalog. Imagine a desolate mind manifested via sheet music.

Waxing Moon takes a somewhat different approach. It’s the first album where Foon uses her own name instead of a moniker, and furthermore, the cello appears to take a notable backseat to the piano when it comes to being the isolated sailboat carrying Foon’s ardent lyrics. Guests on the release include Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), bassist Mishka Stein (Patrick Watson), Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes), and Patrick Watson as co-vocalist on the track, “Vessels.” Sophie Trudeau, the violinist who shares Foon’s post-rock history, also contributed.

Waxing Moon is out February 20, and you can pre-order it here. Check tour dates plus the title track and “Ocean Song” below.
