Further proving that the only good kind of gun is one with two N’s (Anna, Billy, etc.), singin’/songwritin’/guitar pickin’ man Steve Gunn is back with a new album. The Unseen In Between, his fourth studio album, will be out January 18 via Matador Records.

Two weeks after the release of his last album Eyes on the Lines, Gunn’s father passed away. While that is not directly the inspiration behind every song on the album, having come out the other side of such a traumatic, crushing experience certainly informs a great deal of The Unseen In Between. A feeling of musical renewal and emotional complexity pervade the album.

Whether exploring the unspoken relationship between bodega owner and cat (“Luciano,”) or trying to humanize those cast aside by society (“Vagabond,”) or writing “an end of album surf ballad” (“Paranoid,”) or — on the album’s centerpiece track — paying tribute to his late father (“Stonehurst Cowboy,”), Gunn tries to find empathy in a time where the world seems to be wanting for it.

Hear for yourself by listening to “New Moon,” the great new (moon) lead single off of The Unseen In Between, down below. You can also check out the album’s artwork and full tracklisting, as well as all of Steve Gunn’s upcoming North American and European tour dates. Before the tour kicks off in earnest, Gunn will perform a three-night (over three weeks) residency at Union Pool in Brooklyn that starts…*buys calendar, checks calendar*…whoa, October 25. That’s TOMORROW!

The Unseen In Between is out January 18 on Matador Records and can be pre-ordered here.
