On “The Possum,” the opening track of Sun Kil Moon’s recent Universal Themes, Mark Kozelek details a visit to Justin Broadrick before a concert from Broadrick’s industrial metal band Godflesh. Through the song, Kozelek makes it seem like he and this Broadrick character have a pretty good relationship, a friendly rapport even. So much so that it seemed not impossible for the two to collaborate on music. Well, Stereogum reports that the prophecy of “The Possum” has come to pass. On February 19, 2016, Sun Kil Moon will unite with Broadrick’s Jesu project for the appropriately titled Jesu/Sun Kil Moon, released through Kozelek’s Caldo Verde label.
Now, February 19’s an awful long way into the future, but the project’s been teased for a little while now already. Back in April, Jesu brought word of the album’s existence to his Twitter following, yet then fell silent on further details. Here we are, these months later, with the details before your very eyes. While you’re here, feast your eyes on the Kozelek-iest song titles of all time: “Last Night I Rocked The Room Like Elvis and Had Them Laughing Like Richard Pryor” and “America’s Most Wanted Mark Kozelek and John Dillinger.” RIP, the possum.
