You know that moment in The Lion King where adult Simba lies down on a cliff, and the African dust particles align to coax him to have as much dirty lion sex as possible? In the context of Thee Oh Sees, and if Disney had chosen to abandon their institutional goal of toddler corruption, that not-entirely-legible word would possibly lean toward “hiatus” instead. You think Thee Oh Sees were on hiatus, but really, were they? If you squint your eyes, isn’t “Atticus” also a possibility? And so began a John Dwyer-led book club, where the first novel chosen was Harper Lee’s wonderful racial commentary from 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird.
But wait! In addition to the aforementioned hypothetical book club, the Bay Area-bred band also released Drop last year, so you know that any declared sabbatical wasn’t actually much of one. Or something. There were some seemingly spontaneous lineup changes, but where vocalist Brigid Dawson went briefly missing (she wasn’t on Drop), Mutilator Defeated At Last is marking her return. The newest LP is out May 18 on Castle Face. The track “Web” is below.
These guys are clearly the musical equivalent of Kenyans in a marathon.
