Knowing that moving targets are harder to hit, adroit Moscow musician Kate Shilonosova finds herself in pastures new with every venture in which she is involved. As a member of Glintshake and Moscow Scratch Orchestra, Shilonosova is free to foray into musical arenas as disparate as dynamic new wave-y post-rock and experimental Cornelius Cardew-inspired avant composition respectively. As Kate NV, Shilonosova folds in Japanese, British synth and bubblegum pop, atonal compositions, sound loops, minimal bubbles and feathery electronics.
After the universal acclaim heaped upon her debut album — originally released by Orange Milk in February 2016 — everyone wants a piece of Kate NV. But it will be the highly regarded RVNG Intl. that will release her sophomore effort. The much-anticipated для FOR contains ten symmetrically-titled tracks (three-letter Russian-English words) and will be out June 22 on LP and digital DL (an exclusive CD version will be issued in Japan this summer to coincide with her upcoming tour there).
A set of warped and watery videos for для FOR’s songs has been created by Sasha Kulak and will follow the release of the album online. However, the first of these is being released today. Watch and listen to “дуб OAK” below as it ebbs, flows, and ripples coolly. Word is that the accompanying live shows in support of для FOR will feature Kate improvising tracks from memory and recreating scenes from the Kulak song-films, and I for one can’t wait to have her in my sights.
