Out here in the Pacific Northwest, winters take on a certain bleakness you can only know if you’ve lived through a rain-soaked season west of the Cascades. Other parts of the country freeze, but there’s often rainfall for weeks. Of course, without that precipitation, we wouldn’t have our pristine greenery. The winter is the season of renewal, and it’s a mood Portland, OR’s Candace expertly maps out on record after record.
Over the course of nearly a decade, a name change, and geographical relocations, the trio of Sarah Rose (guitar/bass/vocals), Sarah Nienaber (guitar/bass/vocals), and Mara Appel DesLauriers (drums/vocals) has specialized in slow burn rock that’s perfect listening during these ceaseless months of cold and grey. You could throw on any jam from their back catalog and stare out the window and brood. It’s not morose, but when you’re feeling down, Candace lifts you back up with their musical tonic.
Following up on their last record, 2016’s New Future, New Ruins is chock full of hypnotic, dark dream pop that’ll get you through the relentless winter months. Music can’t solve all of your problems, but it can make you feel something every once in a while.
